South Western Sydney PHN assists practices to leverage information technology for prescribing medications to their patients.
The use of information technology when prescribing medications has come a long way from the paper-only days.
A prescriber begins their journey by registering to eRX and activating the electronic prescription function in their clinical software. This can be verified by looking for a barcode in the prescription printout.
Next is doing away with the printout altogether and the prescriber sending the prescription through electronic prescribing through their clinical software as an SMS or email.
Finally, the prescriber can avail of a real time prescription monitoring (RTPM) solution to assist them. In New South Wales, there is the free SafeScript NSW from NSW Health. This platform runs in the background and can check if the medication being prescribed can have an adverse reaction to a current prescription or if there any scenarios that may be of concern (i.e. doctor shoppers).
