Earlier this month we launched a COVID-19 literacy survey to understand people’s experiences and understanding of information regarding COVID-19, and the changing rules and regulations throughout 2020-21.

It is great to see that 93 per cent of our survey participants believe they have access to accurate and credible health information about COVID-19. A further 90 per cent believe wearing a mask and sanitising effectively reduces the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

Surprisingly, we found participants receive their health information from a wide range of sources; our biggest group of participants (21 per cent) said they get their health information from friends and family, and 17 per cent from trusted healthcare professionals.

Eighty nine per cent of participants believe there is currently an effective vaccine available which will protect you from getting severely ill or dying if you get COVID-19 and 93 per cent of participants understand how COVID-19 spreads within the community.

It’s great to know 90 per cent of participants will continue to sanitise once the pandemic is over!

We appreciate your feedback and hope you continue to rely on reputable sources of information to help you make informed choices and stay up-to-date on the latest information about COVID-19.

Head to Health hubs are providing free and easy-to-access mental health support in South Western Sydney, attendees at the launch of the new Commonwealth-funded service were told on Wednesday, 8 December.

The clinics opened in September and are leading the state in the number of consumers accessing support.

The service provides short-to-medium term support for people experiencing moderate-to-high levels of mental health distress. People who need support can call 1800 595 212 or pop into one of the hubs at any time to discuss their mental health needs and concerns.

Dr Keith McDonald PhD, Chief Executive Officer of South Western Sydney PHN (SWSPHN) which commissions the service, said South Western Sydney was on the frontlines of the pandemic when funding for the service was announced in August.

“The pandemic and the lockdown had a heavy impact on our community, with an increase in psychological distress,” he said. “What was needed was a high quality, flexible service that was open to everyone, with no out-of-pocket costs.

“Together with One Door, we have worked hard to get these services established, and our community has embraced the service with more than 150 individuals already accessing Head to Health.”

Kathi Boorman, Chief Executive Officer of One Door Mental Health which delivers the service, reported a 25 per cent increase in referrals compared to the previous financial year, with the uncertainty, job losses, isolation and stress on relationships caused by the pandemic.

“We really needed the service up and running in a short period of time,” she said. “We needed a service that was more humane and person-centred. Feedback from services users includes: it is helpful, life-saving, staff are friendly and approachable, and it is mental health support which works.”

Program Manager Chris Jones said Head to Health made the first step to seeking support easy.

“We have a skilled and passionate multidisciplinary team providing efficient, effective and navigable support to people of all ages, genders, sexuality and cultural backgrounds,” he said.

All families can experience difficult times and sometimes need extra help and support for a range of reasons. This may include parenting challenges, domestic and family violence, mental health, financial stress and substance misuse.

Family Connect and Support (FCS) is a service which can help your patients and their family connect to the right services and support at the right time.

FCS is a free and voluntary service, with anyone able to contact or make a referral to access information and advice to help with individual needs and circumstances. If the issues are more complex, an FCS worker will develop a plan with your patient which is right for them and their family, including staying connected if there is a wait for any of the services.

There is no formal eligibility criteria for Family Connect and Support. In most cases however there must be a child/young person aged 0 to 18 in the family or household.

SWSPHN is compiling a list of general practices willing to manage COVID-19 cases in the community as we transition to living with the virus.

As COVID-19 vaccination rates rise and restrictions are eased, we expect there will be more but milder COVID-19 cases in the community, people for whom hospital care is neither desirable nor appropriate.

General practice is critical to ensuring COVID-positive people with mild to moderate symptoms can be effectively cared for in the community.

As highlighted in a recent Practice Pulse, funding has been announced to support and strengthen primary healthcare.

The Department of Health’s intention is that practices willing to manage COVID-19 positive patients will receive access to:

  • a bundle of PPE from the National Medical Stockpile
  • pulse oximeters for their patients where clinically indicated
  • support from the PHN-commissioned home visits
  • a new $25 MBS rebate for general practitioners which can be claimed in addition to existing general consultation items to support face to face care of COVID positive patients
