Aim of meeting:
To strengthen evidence-based cancer screening and early detection practices in primary care by providing updates on bowel, breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening pathways, referral processes and guideline changes; improving understanding of the Direct Access Colonoscopy service, breast density, HPV vaccination and PSA testing; supporting confident interpretation and communication of screening results; and enhancing integration with the National Cancer Screening Register and local referral pathways.
Learning outcomes:
- Identify screening practices and referral pathways for bowel, breast, cervical and prostate cancers – including updates, invitation and interpreting and communicating results.
- Outline the Direct Access Colonoscopy (DAC) service, including referral pathways, eligibility and process.
- Define breast density and explain its implications for mammographic sensitivity, including when to recommend supplementary investigations.
- Describe the need for HPV vaccination including recommendations when there are deviations from the vaccination schedule.
- Identify men in general practice who are appropriate candidates for PSA-based prostate cancer screening, applying age, family history and ethnicity criteria.
