Information, tools and resources for primary health care providers and community
The words ‘health literacy’ describe how a person accesses, processes, understands and communicates information about health and healthcare.
When a person has good health literacy, they can make better choices about their health. This helps them lead a healthier life, lower medical costs, and avoid hospital stays.
There are two main parts of health literacy:
Individual health literacy – A person’s ability to find and use health information to make good choices about their health
The health literacy environment – How easy or hard the health system makes it for people to manage their health
