Immunisation is easier and cheaper than you think

GP gives a young girl the high-five for being immunised

Recent feedback from local GPs shows some people in South Western Sydney delay getting immunised because they worry about cost or not knowing where to go. Most recommended vaccines under the National Immunisation Program are free for eligible people, and there are many convenient places across our region where you can be immunised.

This article gives a quick overview of the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and the main options for getting your vaccines in South Western Sydney.

What is the National Immunisation Program?

The National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides a wide range of vaccines at no cost for eligible babies, children, teenagers, adults and older people. This includes routine childhood vaccines, pregnancy vaccines, flu shots, and other recommended vaccines depending on your age and health needs.

If a vaccine is funded under the NIP, you will not pay for the vaccine itself. Some providers may charge a consultation fee, although many offer bulk billed or free immunisation appointments.

For detailed information on NIP-funded vaccines and what you might expect to pay, see our full article on vaccine costs in NSW.

Public Health Unit immunisation clinics

A free immunisation program is available through the NSW Health Local Health District’s Public Health Unit. These clinics provide NIP vaccines for eligible children and adults, including catch-up vaccinations at convenient locations throughout South Western Sydney.

Aboriginal health services

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can also be immunised at Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service and Gandangara Health Service. These services have a very good understanding of immunisation needs for First Nations people and offer culturally safe care, and staff can help you understand which NIP vaccines you or your children are due for.
