Earlier this month, we launched a survey to better understand how our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community interacts with healthcare and healthcare providers.

Findings from the survey, aimed at South Western Sydney residents, will help us to develop better targeted messages about Indigenous health and health needs in our local community.

Aboriginal health is a key priority for SWSPHN and we aim to close the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians’ life expectancy by improving access to culturally appropriate primary care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The survey was completed by a total of 92 people, all who identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Of these respondents, 42 per cent are unaware of the 715 health check.

The 715 health check is an important, free health check for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which assists in identifying health risks early to prevent chronic conditions from developing.

A total of 55 respondents indicated they would like to know more about the 715 health check.

When asked how participants accessed health information, the majority (49 per cent) told us they gather information about health and healthcare from friends, family and community members.

When asked what mode of healthcare is preferred, 44 per cent indicated they attend a local Aboriginal medical service.

Survey results indicate that the community would like to learn more about dental services, getting the 715 health check, and having an eye check.

Other services of high value to the survey respondents, include heart health checks, respiratory services and child health.

Unfortunately, 15 per cent of respondents said they felt they were not respected or felt safe when visiting the doctor’s office indicating there is a greater need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness Training in general practice.
