The Primary Care Workforce Team supports GPs, nurses, allied health professionals and other health workers across South Western Sydney by delivering workforce planning, education, engagement and commissioning activities that strengthen the workforce and improve access to care.

    This work aims to identify current and emerging health needs in the community, support high-quality primary health care services, improve care pathways and develop new models of care, and commission services that address gaps and improve access to care.

Supporting the primary care workforce

The Primary Care Workforce Team at the PHN supports the workforce through data-driven initiatives which respond to community needs, strengthening attraction, retention, capacity and sustainability to improve access to care and health outcomes across South Western Sydney.

The Primary Care Workforce Team operates across three key areas, which support the development and sustainability of the primary care workforce:

  • Workforce Strategy – shapes the understanding of the primary care landscape through collecting and analysing data to identify shortages, gaps and needs.
  • Workforce Engagement – building relationships with students, registrars, nurses and allied health professionals, and commissioning access to health services such as Urgent Care.
  • Workforce Development – providing education and professional development opportunities for clinicians
 

Workforce strategy

Workforce strategy focuses on planning for the future of the primary care workforce in South Western Sydney. This work includes strategy planning, analysing workforce data, identifying shortages, gaps and needs, and supporting strategies that strengthen the workforce across the region.

Focus areas include:

→ developing a primary care workforce strategy for Greater Western Sydney

→ supporting initiatives that attract and retain health professionals

→ working with universities and training organisations to support students and registrars

→ monitoring workforce challenges, such as practices at risk of closure

→ contributing to workforce planning for GP training and registrar placements

Projects such as the GPs in Hospitals initiative help increase exposure to general practice and support future workforce growth.

Workforce development

Workforce development supports education, training and professional growth for the primary care workforce.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities are designed for GPs, nurses and allied health professionals.  This includes training, conferences and networking opportunities that support clinical practice, strengthen multidisciplinary learning and address regional health priorities.

For practice managers, CPD opportunities focus on enhancing knowledge, expertise and skills in areas such as productivity, workforce attraction and retention strategies.

Programs aim to:

→ strengthen clinical knowledge and skills

→ support multidisciplinary learning

→ provide conferences and networking opportunities

→ address priority health topics for the region

→ connect clinicians with practical training opportunities

Workforce engagement

Workforce engagement focuses on building strong relationships with the primary care workforce across South Western Sydney, including general practice, allied health professionals, students, registrars and other primary care providers.

Key activities include:

→ supporting GP registrar and GP registrar supervisors

→ increasing awareness of support available for registrars and practice nurses
