The Federal Government has announced significant modifications to the new Assignment of Benefit process scheduled to begin on 1 July 2026.
The Assignment of Benefit process is about creating digital solutions to improve Medicare payment processes. Existing paper-based processes will be replaced by electronic options, to increase transparency for patients and better ensure the integrity of Medicare.
Find out moreIn response to concerns raised by stakeholders including Primary Health Networks, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has announced regulatory amendments will be made to support a 12-month transition to the new process.
Key Assignment of Benefit changes:
- from 1 July, verbal consent will be accepted in all healthcare settings for 12 months
- ‘enduring’ assignment of benefit will be an option for all MyMedicare registered patients, residents of aged care homes and patients attending Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), from 1 July 2026 – brought forward from April 2027
- patients attending ACCHOs will be able to make an enduring agreement at multiple sites
- providers and software vendors which have already prepared or are preparing for the new arrangements, including through digital solutions, should continue those preparations
- the department will prioritise prevention and education as practitioners work towards adopting new Assignment of Benefit requirements, and compliance efforts will not begin until regulatory changes are complete
- during the 12-month transition, the department will work with healthcare practitioners on the changed approach, and explore other options to further reduce the administrative burden on both GP practices and patients while ensuring the integrity of Medicare is maintained
The department regularly updates its Frequently Asked Questions document which clarifies the Assignment of Benefit changes, including what the changes mean practically.
