Whether it’s buying, hiring, repairing or cleaning your work uniform or protective wear, the ATO has put together a helpful guide to work-related expenses for nurses and midwives, to help you navigate tax time this year. You can also view this information in other languages

As a frontline worker, an important change this tax period is of course how COVID -19 related purchases may impact your deductions. You can claim a deduction for a COVID-19 tests you paid for from 1 July 2021 as longs as you:

  • used the test for a work-related purpose
  • had a qualifying COVID-19 test, such as a PCR test or a rapid antigen test
  • have a record of your purchase
  • paid for the test yourself and were not reimbursed for the cost by your employer

If you’re planning to lodge online this year, the ATO suggests doing so in late July. By then, information from your health funds, banks, employers and government agencies will be available and are automatically included in your tax return. All you need to do then is check it’s correct and add anything that’s missing.
