Dr Dina Jamil of Landmark Family Medical and Dental Centre in Hoxton Park believes GPs have a vital role to play in a patient’s healthcare journey. As a dedicated health professional she values the opportunity to contribute to the health of her community.
How long have you been a GP and how long have you been practising in the region?
I have been working as a GP for the past 15 years. I began my career in Goulburn, where I practised for six years before moving to Sydney. I have been serving the South Western Sydney community for the last nine years.
When/why did you decide you wanted to become a GP?
I decided to become a GP during my second year of residency at Concord Hospital. I realised GPs play a vital role as the primary point of contact in a patient’s healthcare journey.
We diagnose and treat both acute and chronic illnesses, coordinate long-term care, and provide comprehensive healthcare for patients of all ages.
General practice also offers the opportunity to focus on preventive health, women’s health, chronic disease management, mental health and minor surgical procedures within the community.
What do you love most about being a GP? What part of the job gives you the most satisfaction?
What I love most about being a GP is the continuity of care. We have the privilege of caring for individuals and entire families throughout their lives. Watching patients grow from childhood through adulthood, supporting them during pregnancies, and caring for them later in life creates lasting relationships built on trust.
I also enjoy the challenge of helping patients who present with symptoms rather than a diagnosis. There is great satisfaction in piecing together the clinical clues, navigating the healthcare system and helping patients achieve the best possible health outcomes.
What is the most important thing your practice contributes to this community?
One of the greatest strengths of our practice is the fact we are a fully bulk-billing clinic, making quality healthcare accessible to everyone in our community. We have six full-time GPs and are open six days a week.
Our practice also offers on-site pathology services, registered nurses and a podiatrist. A pharmacy is conveniently located next door and a fully equipped radiology service is available within the same complex.
In addition, many of our staff speak languages other than English, allowing us to provide culturally sensitive care to our diverse community.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, hiking, travelling and swimming. These activities help me maintain a healthy work-life balance and allow me to recharge.
What motivates you to work in our region?
What motivates me to work in South Western Sydney is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a diverse community. The high prevalence of chronic health conditions allows me to support vulnerable patients throughout every stage of their lives and to see the positive impact of ongoing care over time.
I also value the strong primary care networks and continuing professional development opportunities available in the region.
What advice do you give your patients about maintaining good health?
My advice to patients for maintaining good health is to focus on prevention. I encourage regular health check-ups with your GP, maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
I also advise patients to seek medical advice rather than relying on internet searches for symptoms, and to participate in recommended cancer screening programs and other preventive health checks.
