Palliative care: the role of anticipatory medicines in care of patients with life-limiting illness

Aim:
To provide an update on the prescribing of medicines in palliative care including those listed on the Core Palliative Care Medicines List for NSW Community Pharmacy and for GPs to increase their skills in educating their patients, patient’s families and carers on the important role that these medicines play in symptom management.

Learning outcomes:

  • Interpret key palliative care discussion points and outline an individual’s wish to die at home.
  • Implement best practice recommendations for the use of the 5 Core Palliative Care Medicines for palliative care symptoms.
  • Apply anticipatory prescribing for patients receiving palliative care.
