Mastering diabetic foot care: from diagnosis to management

Aim:
GPs will learn how to conduct foot examinations, identify complications, and recognise urgent situations. They will understand the management of diabetic foot disease (DFD) and its link to cardio-renal-metabolic risks, along with the importance of cardiovascular risk assessments. GPs will also gain insights into the prevalence and impact of DFD, including its contribution to morbidity, amputations, and mortality. They will learn about DFD-related foot structure changes, complications like macrovascular and microvascular issues, neuropathy, Charcot arthropathy, and Charcot neuroarthropathy. Additionally, GPs will understand the management algorithm, how to diagnose and refer early, and when to contact the High Risk Foot Service.

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop the skills to assess diabetic feet, identifying at-risk conditions and red flags related to diabetes-related foot disease, foot ulcers, and infections.
  • Apply knowledge in preventing and managing diabetes-related foot disease, while recognising associated complications and their connection to the patient’s broader cardio-renal-metabolic risk.
  • Gain knowledge of management algorithms for diabetes-related foot disease and establish referral pathways to multi-disciplinary High Risk Foot Services to help reduce morbidity, mortality, and the risk of amputation.
